You can help us restore our Lehigh Valley caboose!

Thanks to new donations received over the weekend, we have updated our Caboose-O-Meter as of April 8! Thank you to everyone who has donated to this project so far!

As we roll into spring, our volunteers have begun to tackle the interior restoration of our Lehigh Valley caboose. Since the historic car's arrival at our museum at the end of October, our volunteers have completed many important tasks that will help return this car to active service on our museum's demonstration railroad! In November, we made repairs that returned the air brake system to functionality. Several members helped in removing corroded pieces and needle scaling the exterior of the caboose. The old obsolete oil stove has been removed, and will be replaced. The ice chest has been temporarily removed so that we can make repairs where condensation buildup has causes rot. We have already begun stripping paint off the interior woodwork, which brings us to our next fundraising effort.

Our museum is looking to raise $2000 that will help us purchase lumber so that we can replace missing interior fixtures and repair any damage. We will also be completing exterior sheet metal repairs and preparing the surface for sandblasting and primer. Your contribution will help us meet that goal! You can donate immediately using using PayPal by visiting our Museum Support page or clicking on the Donate button below.   You can also mail your contribution to us (make sure you note "LV 95100" on your check). Every little bit helps! Thank you for your support!

Restoration of BR&P caboose #280 continues

The winter months, having chased us into our restoration shop, has seen some renewed work on the interior restoration of Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railroad caboose #280.   We have been working for many years to backdate the #280 to its BR&P configuration after having some interior and exterior changes made during its January 1971 rebuild by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.   Here are a few photos of the recent progress.
All of the interior storage cabinet doors were installed in the car.

Replica details like door knobs were installed and door holds were custom made by an R&GVRRM member on his wood lathe.

As part of the restoration of BR&P #280, we need to replicate the upper bunks that were in one end of the car. Part of that replication requires the fabrication of the metal hinges that held the front of the bunks on either side of the car. The images in the Flickr collection below show the originals which are in BR&P #289. We want to replicate the same hinges for the #280. We are looking for someone who could help us make them. Please contact us if you could help us. Thanks!
