NOTE: We will make every effort to get your video to you before Christmas, but we can not guarantee holiday delivery after Wednesday, December 19th.

Just over sixty years ago, the members of the Kodak Camera Club of the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York decided that the soon to disappear rail passenger service on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (nee Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railroad) from Rochester to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania would be a subject to record in color on Kodachrome motion picture film in order to preserve the images of that rail operation for posterity.  Filmed around 1951 based on the motive power used, the regularly scheduled operation would cease in 1954 although there were NRHS excursions with steam and diesel power from both Rochester and Buffalo to Clearfield and other points.

The images were recorded on 16mm film and were edited to form the Vanishing American.  A separate magnetic sound track was recorded and converted to an optical sound track on the Ektachrome release prints made from the original edited Kodachrome 16mm master.  The Kodachrome master survives today in near perfect condition having been donated to the R&GVRRM by Kodak over a decade ago, but the Ektachrome release prints have faded markedly.   The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad recently partnered with Kodak to digitize at 1080p resolution the Kodachrome master film while the R&GVRRM transferred and re-mastered the soundtrack from the best of several of the Ektachrome prints which were used to make the recent DVD and Bluray releases of the Vanishing American for sale here.

We hope that you'll enjoy this visit to the past as we travel from the Lincoln Park engine terminal to the west side of Rochester and the old Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh passenger depot for the departure of the train south to Machias Junction and Pittsburgh.   The high-wheeled B&O Pacific will pull the train through the countryside south of Rochester to Salamanca, and we are along for the ride.

Dismantling of Charlotte Swing Bridge continues

Built by the King Bridge Company in 1905 for the New York Central Railroad, the so-called Hojack Swing Bridge replaced an earlier span built by the Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburg Railroad (nicknamed the "Hojack" line). Operation of the route passed to Penn Central and Conrail, and the last movement over the bridge took place in the mid-1990's. With no customers remaining, the route over the bridge was abandoned, and successor CSX petitioned (along with the Coast Guard) for its removal. Crews began the dismantling process at the beginning of November, delayed a few days by storm conditions created by Hurricane Sandy. This view is from the west side on November 6, 2012, photo by Otto Vondrak.

Dismantling of the control house began before the rest of the bridge. CSX has set aside several artifacts from the control house for preservation. Photo by Otto Vondrak, November 6, 2012.

A few days later, a significant portion of the bridge has been removed. Two workers can be seen on the bridge planning their next move. Photo by Otto Vondrak, November 16, 2012.

Work continues through November at the museum

Volunteers Rob Platt and Mike Walsh were busy packing up and cleaning up workbench areas inside our Restoration Shop. Eventually this whole wall will need to be cleared to make way for new construction inside the shop.

Museum manager Dave Scheiderich and museum president Mike Dow greased our mechanical Tamper the other day so it would be ready to help complete a track repair project near Reid's Crossing.

Mike Dow used our museum's backhoe to realign a section of track near Reid's Crossing, with the help of Dave Scheiderich as a spotter. The area was backfilled with ballast and tamped to help repair the alignment through this section.

The father and son team of Charlie and Jesse Marks have been hard at work stabilizing and repairing our New York Central wooden caboose. One end has been repaired and primed.

We're always busy through the fall and winter at the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum! We welcome anyone interested in volunteering for our museum. We have lots of different things to do for any skill level or skill set. Find out how you can help!

Monthly Museum Meeting - November 15

Frostbite Ferroequinology: The Sequel with Duncan Richards: "This is a follow up presentation to one featured a bunch of years ago. Rare-Mileage Trip Oct. 27 - SOLD OUT!!

THIS TRIP IS SOLD OUT!!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 27!
The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum will be sponsoring a rare-mileage public fan trip and fundraiser over the Livonia, Avon & Lakeville Railroad. You won't want to miss this special trip, one of the first public passenger excursions operated end-to-end over the LA&L in recent memory!

The Route
Once operated as the Erie Railroad's Rochester Division, part of this route was sold to the new Livonia, Avon & Lakeville Railroad in 1964. In 1996, they expanded by acquiring the Avon-Genesee Junction portion, as well as the ex-Lehigh Valley Henrietta branch from Conrail. The railroad has enjoyed continued growth and success, making them one of the busiest short lines in the region! Thanks to the cooperation from the LA&L, we are able to make this special trip possible.

THIS TRIP IS SOLD OUT!!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!

The Equipment
Ride in comfort in our reconditioned ex-New York Central stainless steel Budd coaches, hauled by pristine Alco locomotives (to be determined) provided by the LA&L. The train will consist of coaches 2571 (the "Hamilton Fish," New York's 16th governor), 2566, and RPO/power car 5012 (the "Alonzo B. Cornell," New York's 27th governor). Our 1941-built coaches are equipped with working toilets, however due to their vintage construction, they are not wheelchair accessible (We will, of course, make every effort to accommodate folks who require some assistance with boarding. If you have questions about accessibility, please contact us). Please understand that we reserve the right to substitute equipment as dictated by the railroad.

THIS TRIP IS SOLD OUT!!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!

The Ride
Parking and boarding will take place at the Conesus Lake Sportsmen's Club campus, located off of Stone Hill Road in Lakeville, New York. This special excursion will depart from Lakeville at 11:00 a.m. and run north to Mortimer Junction (just south of Jefferson Road in Henrietta). The crew will change ends, and the special train will run south and return to Lakeville in the afternoon. Planned photo run-bys will take advantage of the best sun angles possible at various locations along the railroad, with a tentative return time of 5:00 p.m. to Lakeville. A box lunch and a detailed route guide is included as part of the ticket price, and drinks and snacks will be available for purchase on board the train. We are also working on ideas for additional perks and premiums to offer our passengers, so please check back often!

Ride behind vintage diesels August 19!

Railroads have been a vital part of our nation's success for more than 150 years, thanks to continuous expansion and innovation. One of those innovations is the diesel locomotive, which has been the backbone of the industry since the 1940s. From the earliest switch engines to today's high-horsepower thoroughbreds, the diesel locomotive has been essential to the growth of American railroads.

On Sunday, August 19, the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum will host its annual Diesel Day, where visitors will not only see and hear a collection of restored vintage diesels, but also ride behind these kings of the rails. Visitors will have a chance to meet the crews and see what's under the hood of these fascinating machines.

All tours begin at the New York Museum of Transportation, 3395 East River Road, Rush, N.Y., where visitors will board an authentic electric trolley car that will meet all diesel trains. One admission is good for entry to both museums! Admission is $8 for Adults (15 and over), $7 for Seniors (65+), $3 for Children (3-15). For more information, please visit our web site at www.rgvrrm.org or call (585) 533-1431. Tickets are first come, first serve, so don't be left at station for this special event!

A promising sign

Look what is ready for pickup and delivery to the museum... The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum's new 4x8 sign! The sign's bold new design was created by volunteer Otto Vondrak. All of the sign work including vinyl cutting and application was done by volunteer Christopher Hauf. It will be installed on a new frame and backer built by volunteer Dan Waterstraat and others. A real team effort, the result is now visible to all who pass by our museum site on Route 251, next to Industry Depot. Our new sign was installed on June 30, and already is generating attention! Take a drive by and see for yourself... Better yet, come out this Sunday for a train ride and museum tour! All tours begin at the New York Museum of Transportation on East River Road.

More progress on the Erie #C254

More nice progress has been made on the maintenance work on Erie Railroad caboose #C254 over the past week.    The entire west side of the car has had its first pass on buffing, and is looking really good.   Work on the east side has also started.

Where we started from...

Progress on the east side.  04.28.2012
Before polishing...
Work on the roof has also continued with most of the needle scaling complete.   Only the edges that roll over to the sides need to be done.   It has been a real team effort.   The focus has now shifted to wire wheeling the cleaned roof to get some of the rust off before sealing and painting.   Again, that has been a real team effort with no fewer than five different volunteers lending a hand.
The south roof completely needle scaled and ready for wire wheeling.   The steel plates welded to the roof are where the roof walks original to the car were once attached.   We are considering adding them back on prior to repainting to further restore the car.

Time for a little maintenance - Erie #C254

Restored and repainted in 1994, Erie Railroad caboose #C254 has been the backbone of the R&GVRRM's operating fleet since then.   With the 2012 season opening looming on Sunday, May 20th, it was decided to bring the #C254 into the shop for some maintenance.    The work will include stripping the failed coating from the roof and repainting it, repairing and repainting the windows, repainting the Erie logos on the sides, some interior cleanup and a good polishing of the red exterior paint.    We are already have about two weeks of work into the caboose, and here are some photos of the progress.

Mother Nature is pretty cruel on our equipment's paint so we wanted to shine the #C254 back up.   Volunteer, Christopher Hauf, started the process of compounding and polishing the #C254 to bring its shine back.   A portion of the west side was being done on April 17, 2012.

And polishing work was continued by Christopher Hauf during the Saturday, April 21, 2012 work session.

As always, we welcome donations to help offset the cost of our work on the #C254.   Click here to donate via PayPal today.    Thanks!

You can help us restore our Lehigh Valley caboose!

Thanks to new donations received over the weekend, we have updated our Caboose-O-Meter as of April 8! Thank you to everyone who has donated to this project so far!

As we roll into spring, our volunteers have begun to tackle the interior restoration of our Lehigh Valley caboose. Since the historic car's arrival at our museum at the end of October, our volunteers have completed many important tasks that will help return this car to active service on our museum's demonstration railroad! In November, we made repairs that returned the air brake system to functionality. Several members helped in removing corroded pieces and needle scaling the exterior of the caboose. The old obsolete oil stove has been removed, and will be replaced. The ice chest has been temporarily removed so that we can make repairs where condensation buildup has causes rot. We have already begun stripping paint off the interior woodwork, which brings us to our next fundraising effort.

Our museum is looking to raise $2000 that will help us purchase lumber so that we can replace missing interior fixtures and repair any damage. We will also be completing exterior sheet metal repairs and preparing the surface for sandblasting and primer. Your contribution will help us meet that goal! You can donate immediately using using PayPal by visiting our Museum Support page or clicking on the Donate button below.   You can also mail your contribution to us (make sure you note "LV 95100" on your check). Every little bit helps! Thank you for your support!

Restoration of BR&P caboose #280 continues

The winter months, having chased us into our restoration shop, has seen some renewed work on the interior restoration of Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railroad caboose #280.   We have been working for many years to backdate the #280 to its BR&P configuration after having some interior and exterior changes made during its January 1971 rebuild by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.   Here are a few photos of the recent progress.
All of the interior storage cabinet doors were installed in the car.

Replica details like door knobs were installed and door holds were custom made by an R&GVRRM member on his wood lathe.

As part of the restoration of BR&P #280, we need to replicate the upper bunks that were in one end of the car. Part of that replication requires the fabrication of the metal hinges that held the front of the bunks on either side of the car. The images in the Flickr collection below show the originals which are in BR&P #289. We want to replicate the same hinges for the #280. We are looking for someone who could help us make them. Please contact us if you could help us. Thanks!

As seen in Railfan & Railroad magazine!

In the April 2012 edition of Railfan & Railroad magazine, you'll find an article by our museum vice president Joe Nugent about the acquisition of Lehigh Valley caboose #95100. The article details the pitfalls and planning that surround the acquisition of historic railroad equipment. Our museum was fortunate to have been alerted to the opportunity to acquire this historic piece of equipment so close to our home. The caboose is one of our active restoration projects, and we are continually seeking out donations that will allow us to complete its restoration to operation and carry visitors over our demonstration railroad. You can help! No amount is too small. If you'd like to get your hands dirty, consider joining our museum and becoming an active volunteer!

Exterior work begins on our Lehigh Valley caboose

Volunteer Jim Bridgen working inside our Restoration Shop on our Lehigh Valley caboose. Photo by Chris Hauf, Feb. 4, 2012

Off with the old... We have started preparing the metal exterior surface of our Lehigh Valley caboose for repair and refinishing. Volunteer Jim Bridgen uses a borrowed needle scaler to begin the process of removing the old and flaked Conrail paint in preparation for grit blasting and priming this coming spring. The R&GVRRM is currently working on acquiring several additional needle scalers to aid in the work on the caboose and several other upcoming projects. We can now support several air tools at once due to our install in 2011 of a new 80-gallon Ingersoll Rand air compressor/drier system in our shop.

During this first phase of restoration work, we are trying to raise $2000 to cover the costs of materials for the steel body repair and refinishing. You can donate immediately using PayPal, or you can mail your contribution to us (make sure you note "LV 95100" on your check). We're also seeking donations of materials and paint to help complete this restoration. Every little bit helps! Thank you for your support!

To the new siding...

On Sunday, January 15th, 2012, the R&GVRRM in cooperation with the Livonia, Avon & Lakeville Railroad moved the museum's ex-New York Central Empire State Express passenger train set to its new siding after two years of work by the museum's volunteers excavating, building, leveling and tamping the track.

The R&GVRRM's ex-U.S. Army Fairbanks-Morse H12-44 #1843 has two of the museum's passenger cars already switched out of Industry yard and on to the LA&L mainline.

With LA&L crews in charge and working in cooperation with the R&GVRRM Operating Department, all seven cars were moved to the new siding west of the LA&L across this Sunday.   The museum's ex-Lehigh Valley Railroad caboose #95100 and NYC flat car #506102 were moved back to the museum from storage on the new siding.

The R&GVRRM would like to thank the LA&L for their continued help and support!   We would also like to thank everyone who has donated money toward our Donate-A-Ton fundraising campaign which was used to purchase ballast for the new siding.   While we still need a few more tons donated for some more ballast to complete some leveling work on the siding in the spring and for future extensions of the siding, the great support we have received has allowed us to "move in" to the siding and achieving our goal!   Thanks!!!
